I am no omelette maker (and do you spell it omelet or omelette? I looked it up but the dictionary had both ways. I think omelette is prettier. I know, I'm obtuse.)
Anyhoo….I have no idea where I found the idea of omelettes in a bag. I just knew I didn't have the hang of cooking them individually. Omelettes in a bag were my solution. I believe the original idea probably came from a camper looking for an easy meal while sitting around the fire. They done good! If I can make it look this pretty so can you!
You need to have quart size freezer bags handy. If I only have the cheaper storage version I double bag it. If you're cooking more than one write your name on the outside in permanent marker.
Then you have to decide how big you want your omelette. I do a one egg and my husband a three egg! Crack the egg, put inside the bag and squish (yes, that's the technical term!)
Gather the ingredients for your omelette. This can include anything and everything. I raid our leftovers and salad veggies and start dumping into the bag. I use meat leftovers (ham and bologna are pictured), cheese (I had gorgonzola and cheddar), tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, cooked potatoes and anything else that suits your fancy. Squish all the ingredients together inside the bag.
Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the omelette bags and cook for 13 minutes. I've done as many as seven bags at one time in a large pot.
That's it! Seriously…..that's it! Open your bag and watch it slide onto the plate with great satisfaction! It's a beautiful thing.

Oh my gosh, what a neat idea. It always takes me forever to make everyone omelets. I will be trying this very soon.
ReplyDeleteChandra, the kids love it because they can do their own and it's all ready at the same time. Can't beat it!
DeleteNever heard of such a thing. :)
ReplyDeleteI just make omelets the old fashioned way . . . in a frying pan.
My kids might think this is really fun, though.
:) :) :)
Laurel, I used to do the same thing but this way they're all ready at the same time. And I don't have to take several different orders. Plus, they turn out perfect every time, and mine never did!
DeleteYummy! Love that it saves on cleanup! Wonder if I could let the kids' cook it in my microwave pasta pot?
ReplyDeleteLet me know how it goes if you make it marythemom! Not sure about the microwave but it's worth a try, I guess.
DeleteYay!!! Thank you for this post!!! I've been dying to try these. I think I know what we may be having for dinner tomorrow night ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is really the easiest omelette on the planet. You can't mess it up, and I like that. Let me know if you fix it!
DeleteYour blog layout and colors are so attractive! Very pretty. Oh, and I love the omelette idea too! Would be awesome for camping.

DeleteThese work great for camping too! We feed about 100 people over a 2 hour span at our annual gathering using this technique and everyone is always amazed it works so well!
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike! 100 people in 2 hours….that's a lot of eggs!
DeleteHow cool is that!! I have never seen that before, but cleaning egg pans is NOT my favorite. I think I should try this very soon.
ReplyDeleteI always hated the mess in the pan, too! These really are perfect!

I hope you enjoy your omelette. Thanks for visiting!
DeletePlease be advised that even Ziplock recommends NOT doing this. These bags are not safe when heated, they are not made for that. The plastic will leach into your food. Now some people have said they use the steamer type bags, but I would still recommend caution.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be a buzz kill, but it may be dangerous to your family, especially the males. This type of leached plastic is a know synthetic estrogen that has caused serility in boys.
Thank you for the info. I put a disclaimer at the top of the post and the suggestion to use Ziploc Zip and Steam bags.
DeleteGreat post. I found you via the Tuesday Talent Show from Chef in Training
ReplyDeleteI have linked a pizza I did with leftover roast chicken. Have a good week.
