Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community.

I'm a little late adding my words to the 5 Minute Friday prompt: connect.

We've been a little busy, taking our oldest son back to college for his sophomore year.

Last year at this time I was in a hard place. I wrote about Joshua going off to college and how it affected me here.

This past year has been a journey for me. I've watched my son become independent, separating himself painfully from us to spread his wings. I've also rejoiced as he has come back home to our nest this summer, enjoying and appreciating the uniqueness that is our family.

But now my heart just hurts. As I hug my son I tell him I am proud of him. Holding me tighter he says, mom, I'm proud of you, too. What you've done with your blog, how you've raised us and who we are. I'm proud of you, too.

This from my son who doesn't usually express things eloquently. If he can say it in less words he will.

Tim says, there goes our noise. The silence is deafening. It is so true. Since Rachel is gone and off living married life, Joshua is the spice in our lives that pops in and out, reminding us of the fun and excitement and joy of youth and newness and adventure.

I thought it would get easier. I was so very wrong.

  1. Visiting from Five Minute Friday. I am a mother on the other end of your journey. I am surrounded by 4 little boys between the ages of 10 and 2. I struggle some days to know that I'm doing a good job, to know that I'm not messing them up and that I am being faithful to my calling as a mother. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I hope that one day my son will look at me and say "I'm proud of you, mom". It gives me hope. Thank you.

  2. This is timely for me. We will be taking our youngest son to college tomorrow. I know that I have not really faced all that his going away will mean for all of us! I am just trying to take big breaths and take it one step at a time.
