Dirt Cake

For our Mother's Day dinner my youngest son made me one of my favorite desserts as his present.

DIRT CAKE!

Now if he really wanted to make this fun he could have served it in a flower pot (need I say it needs to be new and unused?) with gummy worms on top and served with a trowel. But since we don't care about all that he skipped it! If you have young kids this would be a fun way to serve it for a birthday party or special occasion.

My family likes Oreos but there was a wee bit too many for my taste. (Of course, my recipe calls for 1 1/2 packages Oreos but you have to round it up to two, don't you know?)

My husband called me frantically while he was helping my son prepare the dirt cake. The recipe just calls for Oreos and my husband had bought chocolate filled ones. Slight panic on his part but that was absolutely fine!

    Ingredients

1/2 stick butter (or margarine), softened
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
    1 cup powdered sugar
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
    3 1/2 cups milk
1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 1/2 large packages Oreo cookies with creme filling

    Directions:

Chop cookies very fine in food processor or blender. The white cream will disappear.
Mix butter, cream cheese, and sugar in bowl.
In a large bowl mix milk, pudding and whipped topping together.
Combine pudding mixture and cream mixture together.
Layer in 8 inch diameter dish (flower pot), starting with cookies then cream mixture. Repeat layers.
Chill until ready to serve (24 hours if possible).

Variations: Like we did you can use any kind of Oreos: double stuffed, regular, chocolate filled. Generic is fine. If you want use the whole 2 packages! Just make sure your dish is big enough (we had an overflow container).
You could use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla. We used french vanilla instead of regular.
Could layer in a 9x13 casserole dish (in hopes it goes farther).

Enjoy!

  1. OH, what a great idea! My Little Man's birthday is coming up at the end of the month and the family joke when they ask me what's for dinner is, "Worms and dirt!" I think I'll clean out a toy dump truck for this!
