Homeschooling in a Busy Season

Between all the wedding preparations, errands, life changes and exhaustion this week has been a light week for school. But even with that there is always learning going on. My two youngest always have "educational" books from the public library, which includes anything from the non fiction section to historical fiction to music cds to books on tape. Even when they're not "doing" school officially they are always surrounded by resources and tons of conversation starters.

Since my oldest got married S will inherit her bedroom. She has ideas on what colors she wants and the bedding she might like. Today part of her "school" was teaching her how to research on the internet for bedding ideas and pricing. She learned how to bookmark sites, create a new folder and think of ways to research her project. I believe the ability to research and investigate new areas of interests is a huge part of our school at home. Plus it got her excited! Score! (As always she was heavily monitored with her use of the internet.)

When we are not as strict with the schooling the kids find things that interest them, whether it's crafts or drawing (M is crazy good at that) or wanting to take voice lessons from me. We never sit around and watch educational TV unless I'm sick and that's all that I can handle that day (although I would actually like to incorporate more educational programs, especially into our science and history studies). Every day is an opportunity to learn if you just look for it.
