Even though we haven't started back to school seriously yet we had another teachable moment today. A 5.8 earthquake struck in Virginia and was felt here in NC. We all looked at each other wondering what was happening. I thought the washer was overloaded with clothes so we went looking for the sound of the rattling. I watched the tv and the computer monitor vibrate and felt the floor shake. It wasn't anything big, just enough to get our attention. Tim called 911 and they confirmed the earthquake. We texted R and J but couldn't get a dial tone. We knew there wouldn't be any damage but it was tough knowing if something happened J was off at college and R was down the street at work but couldn't call. This is my new reality.
S and M and I watched the news for quite a while and then talked about what to do if we DID have a serious earthquake. S said she would go outside and scream and M said he didn't know what he'd do. We then talked about weather safety and looked at the weather site online. There is also a hurricane approaching our coast for the weekend so we talked about that, too.
If you look at all of life as a learning experience there are teachable moments scattered throughout every day. Today we touched on current events, science and vocabulary, among other things.
